In Memory
of Rory Friel
As the finest young athletes from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales gather at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast for the 2026 Schools International Athletic Board (SIAB) Track & Field International, it is fitting that we pause to remember one of the true gentleman of schools athletics, Rory Friel.
For athletes, coaches and officials, Rory was synonymous with the Schools International. He believed passionately in the value of school sport and the unique opportunity SIAB provided for young athletes to experience international competition, build lifelong friendships and take their first steps on the pathway to senior international success.
Rory devoted decades of service to schools athletics, not only as an outstanding teacher and coach at St Colman's College, Newry, but also through his leadership as International Competitions Director of the Irish Schools' Athletic Association, former Chairperson of the Schools International Athletic Board (SIAB), and representative on the Athletics Ireland Board. His influence extended far beyond Ireland, helping to strengthen the Schools International competition and ensuring it remained one of the most prestigious and respected events in the schools athletics calendar.
Those who had the privilege of working alongside Rory will remember his warmth, humour, wisdom and unwavering commitment to young people. Whether organising teams, supporting athletes, mentoring officials or simply offering encouragement from the track, he always placed the athletes at the heart of everything he did.His belief that every athlete deserved the very best experience continues to inspire those who now carry that responsibility forward.
As competition begins in Belfast this weekend, Rory's presence will undoubtedly be felt. His legacy lives on in every team assembled, every athlete proudly wearing their national colours, and every official and volunteer working to make this championship a memorable occasion.
The Irish Schools' Athletic Association joins with our colleagues across the Schools International Athletic Board in remembering a great friend of schools athletics.
We honour his extraordinary contribution, celebrate a life devoted to young people and sport, and give thanks for everything he gave to the Schools International family.
Thank you, Rory. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
